Company specific programma's
If a company or organisation wants its path of development to be effective, it must realise that the process of collaboration passes through a number of stages. In the following paragraphs we will shed a light on TSM’s methods for developing and implementing company-specific programmes.
Getting acquainted and our first reconnaissance
Work on a programme starts the moment the client and TSM’s Business Development Manager get to together to discuss an issue pertaining to the client’s organisation. During this stage, TSM concentrates on determining the client’s problems and allowing both organisations to become acquainted with each other.
Once TSM has acquired a clear image of the organisation and its problems, it will use its findings to make a company assessment and an assessment of its issues and submit them to the client. This will include the rough outlines of a possible (development) course. TSM will round off this stage as soon as the client is satisfied with TSM’s proposals for the company’s goals and the objectives for the course.
Detailed analysis: organisation and needs scan
After TSM and the client have come to a decision on the objectives for the course, it is time for a more in-depth analysis of the organisation and its development needs for the course’s participants. TSM gathers the necessary information by holding specific personal interviews with people from different levels in the organisation. TSM will also hold talks with the highest levels of management in the company and the HRM professionals. In addition, TSM’s experts will be asked to assist in the collecting and researching of relevant material and essential policy documents.
In concurrence with the client, TSM will appoint a Programme Manager to supervise the course. The Programme Managers are always experienced professionals; he or she will be in charge of managing and coordinating the whole course and will be ultimately responsible for the course’s set-up and content.
Finally, the results of this phase will be drawn up in a detailed pyramid of objectives and a rough lay-out for the programme.
Programme design and content
Working closely with the client, the programme team and the experts from TSM will draw up a tailor-made, detailed lay-out for the course.
The aim of this next stage is to define the most effective learning process and integrate the skills and knowledge that are crucial to the client lucidly and comprehensibly into the course, using the pyramid of objectives and the company’s profile as the foundation. New leadership concepts and new approaches to change are processed into the course in such a way that they can be applied to the organisation and to the participants’ working environment immediately.
In the course of many years, TSM has developed and implemented a large variety of course designs, varying from corporate academies to hands-on action learning programmes. In addition, the experts at TSM design repeat-MD programmes for both young management professionals and senior management.
This stage can be rounded off after the content and design of the course have been approved and the teachers, trainers and coaches have been appointed. The programme is all set to begin.
Programme implementation
The implementation of the course is in goods hands with TSM. The teachers and trainers who will be working on the course are well-known authorities in their field and didactically extremely skilled, and the Programme manager will be present to serve as coach and supervisor during the modules whenever necessary.
The Programme Manager acts as the coordinator of the course, but he or she is also the participants’ coach and supervisor for the duration of the programme. Moreover, TSM realises that one of the most important conditions for effective learning is to ensure that the various modules of the course follow on closely from each other, as far as content and process are concerned. The Programme Manager’s role is crucial because he or she* must be able to guarantee that the modules are adjusted to deal with any major new developments within the organisation, the development of the group and the subjects discussed in previous modules. The working methods, though dependent on the course’s set-up, are always very interactive and based on practical skills that can be immediately applied to everyday work situations; the project teams are given ample scope to work on solutions to actual issues occurring in their company.
Embedment and transfer
If the course is primarily designed to support organisational development and change, it should always be founded on the fact that the company has goals to achieve and wants real results that can be applied to the individual’s day-to-day work situation.
The knowledge and skills offered to the participants will support the process of change within the organisation. The manager’s personal development in these situations is the ‘carrier’; as a ‘carrier’, the manage will be able to guide the company, his or her unit and/or his or her team so that it can perform in accordance with the new objectives. Embedment in the organisation and the transfer of this development to colleagues and team members becomes an inextricable part of the course. The programme will often concentrate on the company’s current projects.
If the programmes are part of the Management Development course for a company, or aimed at the professionalization of a certain group of staff members and/or a specific structure of company processes, TSM’s main approach will be to concentrate on the development of the participants, using the organisation’s chosen path of strategy as a foundation.
During the intensive process of educating and training, the managers and professionals will develop the competencies that, as is clear from their personal assessments, they need to improve. Part of the process is the actual application of knowledge and skills to the company environment, but at this level, more will be left to the participant’s own initiative. In these situations, the embedment of the acquired knowledge into the organisation is achieved by means of (team) assignments. These assignments allow the participants to study an issue pertaining to the organisation by using the acquired knowledge, while receiving advice and guidance for their personal paths for improvement. The transfer of the newly gained knowledge and skills is then achieved by actively applying them, and by sharing them with colleagues and staff.
Effect evaluation
Effect evaluation is done at various levels and a several different stages. TSM wants to have joint responsibility, with the client, for a course that is as efficient as possible. Accordingly, the steering committee regularly discusses if, how and how much the selected approach has achieved as regards the intended results. They also inquire about the participants’ satisfaction regards their own development. TSM uses start and end assessments, result measurements on delivery of projects and personal evaluation by the participants as means for effect evaluation.
